About Us

Connotations (E-ISSN 2626-8183) encourages scholarly communication in the field of literature in English (from the Middle English period to the present). It is an international, peer-reviewed journal which focuses on the semantic and stylistic energy of the language of literature in a historical perspective and aims to represent different approaches.

Connotations features articles, responses, and answers to responses, forming strings of peer-reviewed debates that provide an entirely new way of discussing literary texts. Related debates are linked in virtual special issues on topics of general interest such as “Sympathetic Parody,” “Textual Surprises,” and “Poetic Economy.”

Individual articles are published in Connotations continuously throughout the year by the Connotations Society. All contributions are also made freely available on this website. Connotations has no APC (article processing charge) for article submission. Contributions should be forwarded to the Editors by e-mail.

All articles are anonymously reviewed by at least two expert readers. Responses to articles are also published only after peer review. In this way, Connotations ensures that the liveliness of critical debate will be combined with scholarly excellence.

Connotations is a member of the Council of Editors of Learned Journals. Contributions are indexed, for example, in the MLA Bibliography, the World Shakespeare Bibliography and the IBZ/IBR.
